Kids and Bugs

It is so cool to see kids change the way that they react to bugs. Students who have been out in the school gardens for several years now show little to no fear of bugs. They have shrugged off the (false) cultural conception that bugs are gross. And they have adopted the concept that bugs are interesting, and very important for the functioning of healthy soil.

Since working at the Creative Science School, I have heard many times over "This soil has lots of worms. That means it's healthy." It makes me so happy to hear that. When the students are weeding, if they find a bug, everyone gathers around to see it, while one student holds it gently in their hand.

My favorite quote from last Thursday was from a girl who said "I'm good at bugs." Awesome. Yes you are.
