3 Sisters Garden Sprouting

Several weeks ago Creative Science Students planted a 3 Sisters Garden. This week I see that the seeds have sprouted!

The 3 sisters are corn, beans, and squash. Native Americans created this unique and traditional interplanting. These three foods create a complete and healthy diet when eaten together. The plants also all work together in the garden bed.  The corn's sturdy stalk becomes a trellis for the climbing pole beans. The beans are legumes. Legumes fix nitrogen, thereby adding nitrogen to the heavy feeding squash and corn, which need lots of nutrients to thrive. The large squash leaves shade the soil, which helps the soil to retain moisture. The cover also cuts down on weed growth.
