Blossoms [Yoshino Cherry] at Beverly Cleary |
This week the 8th graders at Beverly Cleary planted seeds and tasted various fresh greens and described the time... Spectacular, amusing, fresh, enchanting, and bittersweet. While others reviewed the greens and had mixed reviews when asked to describe. Here are some of their responses: spicy, zesty, disgusting, tangy, jucy, and luscious.

Radiant yellow [Buffalo current, Ribes aureum] in the Bridger Gardens |
The 7th and 8th graders at Bridger brought fresh compost to our soon-to-be vegetable hill. They made their own list of plants they would include in their own spiral hill garden. We reviewed how drier plants will live at the top of the hill and water loving plants will grow best on the bottom. There were some wonderful combinations including flowers, pumpkins, cactus and watermelon.
Two first grade, a kindergarten and a fourth grade class spent their garden time digging in the water garden; making observations, creating waterways and searching for garden critters.

Grape hyacinths in Magnolia showers at the Atkinson Multicultural Garden |
The 4th grade classes at Atkinson added new rocks to the runoff stream and discussed the importance of bioswales and watergardens. In Portland we have a shared sewage system, and rerouting rain water run-off helps to reduce the amount of flow into the system. We left the school today with a job well done.
