Compost!
Look at our beautiful compost signs! We have a 3+ bin system at Creative Science School and the compost bins are running in full force. Compost is a wonderful learning tool. We teach children about the decomposition process via compost. We teach them about soil microbial life via compost. We talk about soil nutrients using compost as an example, and we help students to better understand the cyclical nature of life via compost. Food grows in soil, we harvest the food, we nourish our own bodies with the food, then we place our scraps into the compost bin. Our scraps nourish the soil organisms, who in turn change our scraps into good food for the plants. We lay the finished compost on the soil and feed the plants who feed us.
Ahhhh, isn't life beautiful?
Compost is Grand!
This year the 5th graders at Creative Science School will be learning about Chemistry via compost in January, and will have a lesson in compost exploration come April. There is so much that compost can teach us humans. One of its best lessons is Do Not Waste. When we put our food scraps into the compost instead of into the garbage, we return our food and all of the energy that went into it into the great cycle of life. It is a conservation technique to compost, because we are conserving what we have, instead of wasting it.
Until next time,
Erin
